Learn Chinese? Here’s how to make progress fast:

August 26th, 2008

To learn Chinese can seem to be an insurmountable task. There are seemingly too many difficulties for soembody of English language origin to ever master this fascinating language:

  • different writing with thousands of signs
  • words that if they are pronounced mean something totally different
  • physical distance to China (you can’t just quickly hop over to spend a weekend)

To learn Chinese well, one really would need to spend some time in China. And then where in China? There are different dialects of Chinese, with Mandarin Chinese being the main language. But then there is Cantonese Chinese, spoken in HongKong and Southern China, where there are a lot of economical activities…

One solution that will not make you perfect in either Mandarin or Cantonese, but will give you an excellent start and will immerse you into the language immediately is to listen to Pimsleur Chinese language audios. Everybody I know who used the Pimsleur method is raving about it. These audios allow you to go on a virtual trip to China, every time you listen to them.

Means, you are getting used to the different pronunciation, the ‘music’ of the Chinese language and you allow your brain to acquire the language similar to the way you first learned your own English language. This works well and is a great basis for then continuing to study either one of the two main dialects, Mandarin or Cantonese.

Downloadable Pimsleur language lessons are available from here:

Give the Pimsleur method a try, you will be astonished how fast you will speak your first few phrases in Chinese, either Mandarin Chinese or Cantonese Chinese! Have fun!

Pimsleur Arabic

August 25th, 2008

Learning Arabic can be quite a challenge, especially if you are trying to learn from books only.

The key reason most people struggle with new languages is that they aren’t given proper instruction, only bits and pieces of a language. You learn a few words, then some grammar, then something else but is does not seem to fit together….

Other language programs sell only these pieces — dictionaries; grammar books and instructions; lists of hundreds or thousands words and definitions; audios containing sometimes only useless drills. They leave it to you to assemble these pieces as you try to speak. Pimsleur enables you to spend your time learning to speak Arabic rather than just studying its parts.

It’s really like when you first learned to speak your own language: By hearing the sounds of the new language, your brain starts to get used to the ‘melody’ of the new language and it starts to add meaning to the different sounds (the Arab words). And before you know it, you’ll be understanding and speaking your first Arab phrase.

If you need to speak Arabic, be it the Eastern Arabic Language or the Egyptian Arabic Language, why not give the Pimsleur method a try? You can listen to sample audios online for free, or you can immedaitely dowload the Pimsleur Arabic audios.

Learn a language with Pimsleur

June 23rd, 2008

If you are among the people who wish they had worked a bit harder while at school, especially when it comes to languages, there is hope:

The Pimsleur language learning system is great for learning any language in your spare and ‘idle’ time: The Pimsleur audios help your brain to pick up a second language very much the same you learned your first language: By hearing words, phrases and conversations in the new language, you start to unconciously associate meaning to them and before you know what happened, you will be understanding and speaking the new language.

Use the time you are driving to work, doing manual housework or other chores that do not really use your full brain capacity to listen to the Pimsleur language audios and become proficient in the language you wanted to speak for so long but never really got around to learning.

Curious? Listen to sound samples of the Pimsleur language learning system here.

Roald Dahl - Great Stories For Your Kids

May 12th, 2008

Kids truly love stories. And kids love it when somebody takes the time to tell or read them a fine story. They usually have a few favourite stories which they want to hear over and over again. That’s good, because it allows them to continuously develop the mental images that go with the story and to make use of their own imagination. Some parents do a really great job helping their kind to develop their fantasy and to allow them to have inputs other than from TV. Others are unfortunately not aware, how important it is to encourage this capacity of imagination, fantasy and mental images. Video games and TV may be very parctical to keep kids busy and out of your feet, but they are not really helping the growth of your kids mental abilities.”I don’t have time to read stories to my kids” you may say. That’s truly a problem for some parents, more so if you are a working parent and if you have to take care of your household and kids after your regular work hours. That however does not mean that you can not stimulate the intellect of your kids with good stories. Fortunately, there are plenty very good recordings of childrens novels and stories for kids available. These audiobooks come either on Compact Disc in physical format or even more convenient, free audio books for kids can be downloaded from the internet and you can then either play them on your computer, burn them to CD and listen to them on a regular stereo or on your car audio system, or they can be directly played on an MP3 player.

The great thing is that many of these kids tales can be found for very little or even no money at all! The choice of audio books with kids adventure stories is very hughe and you are sure to find the audios with stories that your children love best.

Roald Dahl - Some of the more well known authors and stories are i.e. Roald Dahl and his series of well known and popular stories like i.e. “Fantastic Mr. Fox“, “The Witches” or “Charlie and the Great Glass Elevator“. These are the tales kids love. They are taken out of a fantasy world but contain parts that the kids recognize from their own daily life. The descriptions of the people and places where the story happens are detailed enough to provide the kids with a good base to start, but then the author leaves enough room for their own imagination. A good tale well told is really ‘cinema in the head’!

Step back a few minutes and close your eyes. Now try to remember one of the stories that you were told when you were still a kid, or if nobody told you a story (how sad…) try to remember a book you read then. Normally you will find that a combination of images and even feelings will pop up in your mind and you are taken back into a long forgotten fantasy world.

Be sure that your kids will be able to also experince these great recollection when they are grown up, help them develop one of the most important mental abilities, creativity and fantasy! With a good kids audio book you can wake up mental abilites that will be important for your kid the entire life …. and you will have a lot of really happy quiet hours yourself, as the kids will listen to these stories over and over again.

George’s Secret Key To The Universe

April 25th, 2008

If you wondered about the universe and the secrets it holds, or if you simply want to understand how earth and all the stars came to be and where we’re headed, then this is a great audio book to listen to:

Stephen Hawking, author of the multi-million copy bestselling A Brief History of Time, and his daughter Lucy explain the universe to readers of all ages. The beauty of this is that it’s not some scientific lingo that only experts understand. ‘Readers of all ages’ means simply, that it’s told in a clear, understandable way.

The story line:George’s parents, who have always been wary of technology, warn him about their new neighbors: Eric is a scientist and his daughter, Annie, seems to be following in his footsteps.

Despite this warning, George befriends them and Cosmos, their super-computer, he finds himself on a wildly fun adventure, while learning about physics, time, and the universe. With Cosmos’s help, he can travel to other planets and a black hole.

But what would happen if the wrong people got their hands on this super computer Cosmos? George, Annie, and Eric aren’t about to find out, and what ensues is a funny adventure that clearly explains the mysteries of science.
